Detection of vessels can be achieved by using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite systems and advanced detection algorithms.

This is useful for dark vessel detection. Flai developed an algorithm for detecting and locating vessels with turned-off transponders and out of range of terrestrial radar systems.

SAR is an active system with day and night and all-weather sensing capabilities. Ships are large metal objects on a smooth water surfaces. Therefore, they have a distinctive signature and are relatively easy to detect.
